Despite cooler weather and some rain, the campfire ban is still in effect for areas just outside city limits.
The City of Prince George lifted its backyard fire ban yesterday. However, campgrounds just outside the city still can’t have fires. The BC Wildfire Service says it constantly reassesses the risk for blazes and its bans. Danger ratings in the region sit at moderate, but dry and hot weather are forecast for the weekend.
“Once that hits, it will only take a couple days for us to go back into a higher fire danger rating,” says Jill Kelsh, fire information officer with the Prince George Fire Centre.
Meanwhile, resources are stretched thin, with over 200,000 hectares, or 2000 square kilometres, burning in the Fort Nelson area alone. Forest fires in Alberta and Saskatchewan also mean out of province support is limited.
