Efforts to preserve our region’s history just got a big boost. A grant from the Northern Development Initiative Trust will allow The Exploration Place to increase its storage capacity for artifacts and documents by more than 70%. The $202,000 grant will cover the majority of the capital costs to install mobile racking. But it means the museum will have to store it’s collection off site when the renovation and installation begins in the fall. The project should be complete by next spring.
Exploration Place CEO Tracy Calogheros says “this new project will essentially be an internal expansion, buying the museum many years of breathing room before bricks and mortar consideration are necessary.” The museum was over capacity in its collection spaces and would have had to turn away donations with the project. “It’s a vastly more efficient use of the same square footage,” Calogheros added.
