The Prince George Cougars kept pace with the defending WHL champions Saturday night, but eventually lost 3-2 in a shootout decision in Kelowna.
Tyler Mrkonjic scored his first goal of the preseason to put the Cougars ahead at 7:03 in the first period. Kole Lind of the Kelowna Rockets responded just over two and a half minutes later to tie the game 1-1. A penalty-filled second period saw nine minor penalties between the two sides, but no goals were scored. Jared Bethune scored in the third for Prince George, only to have Gage Quinney tie the game with two minutes left on the clock. Ted Brennan scored on the backhand in the shootout to take the win for the Rockets.
Mack Shields and Ty Edmonds split goaltending duties for Prince George, turning aside a combined 28 of 30 shots. Exhibition season continues for the Cougars on Wednesday, as they battle the Portland Winterhawks.
