The provincial government has committed $355 million to affordable housing in BC. The money will create upwards of 2,000 new housing province wide.
Local leaders say they will do all they can to ensure Prince George gets its fair share.
City Councillor Susan Scott says she is thrilled with the news.
“I’m excited and I’m particularly excited because we’ve got a great group that work together in Prince George and I think we can access our fair share of that funding.”
The money will be distributed over a five year period. Municipalities, non profits, and other community groups will be able to submit proposals to BC Housing for projects in their community. Scott says Prince George will be ready to submit a proposal when the time comes.
“We have an awesome person in the form of Chris Bone who will be I’m sure right on top of the application process and we will be working together with the folks from BC housing etc that are part of that same committee to ensure that the application process is swift.”
Prince George is already home to three buildings with affordable housing units including Victoria Towers, Elizabeth Fry Place, and Hart Haven.
MLA Mike Morris says he will make sure Prince George isn’t overlooked when it comes time to distribute the funds.
“This program is going to be equally applied throughout the province here. There’s needy people in Prince George. Social housing is as much in demand in Prince George as it is anywhere else in the province.”
The first 50 million dollars will be distributed in the 2016-2017 year.
