Spring is just around the corner and that means bears are starting to come out of hibernation.
There have already been some rumored bear sightings in the University Heights area.
Bears come out of hibernation looking for one thing…food.
The Northern Bear Awareness Society is working to educate the public on bear safety. The organization’s Dave Bakker says the most important thing, don’t give them a reason to venture into your neighbourhood.
“A bear will go back to the last place he found a food source. And in this case it’s a neighborhoods with unsecured attractants and probably the bird feeders that have been left out all winter. We’re a long way from green up and we still need a lot of heat in the ground, so there’s not a lot of food sources right now.”
