Metis people around the country are reacting to yesterday’s Supreme Court Ruling, granting Metis and Non-Status Indians the same rights as status Indian’s. Here in BC there is a strong Metis population who are represented by the Metis Nation of British Columbia. Head of the North Central Region, Brenda Nome, says there are 3,000 Metis members in the region. She expects those numbers will go up following the Supreme Court decision.
“Oh I felt, there was a lot of emotions. I was crying because it’s huge for us. This was 17 years awaiting for this ruling because it was very important. This announcement is a victory for us and it’s historical because Harry Daniels has fought for the rights for discrimination for the rights of Metis in the Indian Act in 1867.”
