Fire crews have determined yesterday’s blaze was caused by two young boys playing with matches. Through its investigation, Prince George Fire Rescue found the boys, aged 12 and 9, were attempting to light a “camp fire” when it quickly got out of control. Charges are not likely.
Crews were first called to the Valleyview area in the Hart around 4:45pm Monday. Smoke was spotted in one of many forested ravines in the neighborhood.
Deputy Fire Chief Cliff Warner says approximately 40 homes were evacuated. He said the fire closed within a few feet of some houses but no serious damage was spotted in the initial stages of the investigation.
Warner said the high winds in the afternoon appeared to push the grass fire into trees. At one point, a witness said the flames were jumping from one tree top to the next.
With the assistance of wildfire crews, city fire crews had the blaze under control by 7:00pm. However personnel continued to deal with hot-spots that threatened to flare up. No injuries were reported. The investigation is in its early stages.
