Mel McConaghy has proved you’re never too old to try something new.
The 80 year old is brand new to the sport of drag racing and decided to try it out for the first time Saturday at the Smoke n Mirrors Big Rig Drag Race. “I thought if I go out out there faster than my age, it’s kind of like 80 over 80,” he laughed.
In fact, McConaghy is raising funds for Alzheimer’s in a campaign he’s started called ’80 Over 80′ raising one dollar for every mile over 80 that he goes in the race. He says it’s a disease that has greatly affected his family after his wife’s three aunts and his two sister passed away from it.
Still, he refuses to let anyone tell him he can’t do anything he sets his mind to. “If you keep busy, it’s like an old truck or an old car, if you drive them and keep them serviced, they almost go on forever,” he said.
The big rig drag racing event held at Nitro Motorsports Park hasn’t been held in Prince George since the early 1980s. President for the park, Brian Barby, says they wanted to bring something new to Prince George with numerous classes able to compete in the race.
More than a dozen trucks competed including numerous logging trucks and highway trucks coming from as far as Chilliwack.
