At Peden Hill Elementary, teams of grade 6 and 7 students built their own go carts. The process started months ago, when kids presented their design ideas. Next, they learned to use power tools to execute their plan. For many, it was their first try at woodworking. Principal Sid Jawanda says it was a great way for learning to come alive, and show kids how to apply their skills in the real world. For today’s big race, the school shut down a city street. Parents, teachers, and younger students were on hand to cheer on the 3 teams competing. The day was made possible thanks to many partnerships; Peden Hill is thanking the school district’s skills, trades and career program, as well as the Centre for Learning Alternatives at the John McGinnis Centre.
