New Bike Theft App Released

Each year, hundreds of bikes are auctioned off, as police are unable to locate the rightful owners. But, now, there’s an app for that. It’s called 529 Garage. In minutes, the make and model, as well as the serial number and photos of your bike can be loaded into the data base so that, should your bike go missing, there’s a much better chance of it being returned.
“We can search by serial number. Most retailers, if we said ‘Here’s a serial number, can you find me the owner?’ I would think most can’t,” says Cpl Craig Douglass with the Prince George RCMP. “This app allows us to search by serial number, by make and by model and we can go from there.”
Between 2013 and 2015, the number of bikes reported stolen has risen by 20% and that’s expected to continue. But, only one in eight bike thefts are reported. The hope is the use of this app will encourage bike owners to report a theft.
Cpl Douglass and others will be heading to various different events around the city over the summer in hopes of getting as many people registered as possible. The next stop will be Canada Day in the Park. However, the local detachment is asking cyclists not to head to the detachment, as it is not equipped to conduct the registrations.
