Chickadees thrive in the heart of the city. Now, a UNBC researcher has discovered that noise impacts their song. Working in local parks, Stefanie LaZerte recorded chickadees singing in the springtime. When she played white noise from a speaker, the birds actually raised the pitch of their song. She then tried the same experiment on birds used to quiet. Those chickadees actually lowered the tone of their call. LaZerte’s PhD thesis has just been published in a prestigious science journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.
