Awaiting a heart transplant since 2012, the right side of 10 year old Cyris Van Dijk’s heart is almost not working. Although it’s been an uphill battle, his heart was full when he was granted his life-long wish Friday.
Holding the key to a brand new trailer, he opened the door to the surprise of a lifetime. Inside he saw all of his friends and favourite superheroes dressed up in full costume to welcome him. Cyris says he was quite surprised. “I didn’t know that it was (my brother) Gage in there and all of his friends and Jacob and all of my other friends,” he said. “I like all my friends.”
The trailer is decorated with superheroes, custom decals, and stuffed toys. It’s a dream come true with help from the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Cyris’ Mother, Tanya, says it’s taken two years to finally come up with the wish, but the last month has been very exciting in preparation. “It’s been about four weeks in the making, so we’ve had the trailer for two weeks and we’ve been hiding it out and just trying to get everything ready.”
Cyris was born with an abnormal heart and arteries which makes the right side muscle of his heart have difficulty working. “The biggest thing with that is the aortic route will rupture so at that moment it’s fatal so we’re waiting and hoping for surgery,” said Tanya.
However, that hasn’t stopped the Van Dijk family from making their little boy’s dream come true. Cyris saw a previous wish from a boy in Edmonton who wanted a superhero trailer and soon enough it was settled. “He was like yeah mom that’s so cool,” Tanya said. “You know you can take me camping and we’ll go razor riding and we can play in the mud and I was like yup, let’s do it.”
Now, superheroes, family, and friends of all ages stand by Cyris. It’s especially seen in the support from his big brother, Gage who has been nothing but a breathe of fresh air. “I just don’t focus on the bad stuff, I focus on the good stuff and what’s yet to come so I always help my mom out as much as I can.”
As Cyris and his family hit the road for an adventure this summer, he wants everyone to know just how happy this wish makes him feel. “Better than anybody in this whole town,” he said.
