The wet weather has led to a very rare discovery in a local backyard! While mowing the lawn, Lee Taylor found this giant puffball mushroom. The fungus weighs in at well over 20 pounds. This is a western giant puffball mushroom; in his 40 years of study, UNBC fungi expert Keith Egger says he has never seen one. In Europe, the largest ever recorded was 2.5 metres across! Taylor says a few weeks ago, she found another mushroom like this one but much smaller, about the size of a soccer ball. This one she fried up with butter and garlic!
