Local Business Frustrated After Losing City Contract

A local company has lost out on a major contract with the city. Spotless Uniform had provided linen services to the City of Prince George for the last 16 years. But the new contract has been awarded to Canadian Linen, and American company based in Burnaby. Spotless Uniform president Shaun Heighington believes in its decision, the city should have considered the company’s contribution to the local economy. The city says contracts like this are subject to bylaws and domestic trade agreements; it’s not allowed to choose based on local preference. By the deadline, it received 3 proposals from contractors to supply and clean coveralls and mats. According to the city, the previous 5-year-deal was worth about $115,000 annually to Spotless. For the new contract, the company says its bid was $72,000 a year, with the competition bidding about $50,000.
