Maclean’s has again released its crime ranking of Canadian cities, putting Prince George in third spot, behind Grande Prairie and Red Deer, Alberta. That’s down from 2010, when Maclean’s ranked Prince George number one. Mayor Lyn Hall takes issue with the magazine’s methodology, which looks at the crime rate per-capita, comparing us to much larger cities like Surrey. Hall says the RCMP is working hard to tackle crime in this city, including new initiatives like Car 60. The program pairs an officer with a psychiatric nurse, with the aim of getting people the help they need, instead of constantly in and out of detention. Hall points to the Canada Winter Games for putting Prince George on the national map, in a very positive way. The Maclean’s article says it’s been 12 years since the national crime rate rose, led by cities across western Canada. According to Maclean’s, cities in Ontario and Quebec showed the lowest increases in crime.
