NUGSS Gets Half The Ask

Council opted to split the ask down the middle. Initially, the Northern Undergraduate Student Society came to Council with a request for $3,000 to help offset the costs of hosting the 21st annual Backyard Barbeque in September. The ask comes as NUGSS opted to bring in an organizer called BluePrint Management at a cost of $20,000. The hope is to bring a premier show to UNBC while piggybacking off the same type of event at UBC Okanagan. However, some Councillors, such as Jillian Merrick, Terri McConnachie and Susan Scott expressed some reservations about coming forward with that much money, especially with Council’s contingency, or “rainy day,” fund now under $5,000.
“I struggle with spending the Lion’s Share of the $5,000 contingency fund on a single event,” said Councillor Jillian Merrick, adding that’s an especially tough pill to swallow when the event charges a cover.
It was Councillor Brian Skakun who suggested have the original amount may be more palatble, to which all of Council agreed.
