Nurse and certified lactation expert Sandra Payne has started a new business, Bump and Beyond. She helps moms who are struggling with breastfeeding. Payne has worked in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, and through bringing up two boys, has plenty of experience with babies. Payne says sadly, there is still a stigma around breastfeeding in public. She is teaching her children that it’s a normal, healthy part of infant development. Northern Health says breastfeeding is a public health priority. Every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30am, the Health Unit on Edmonton Street hosts a breastfeeding support group. There is always a nurse on duty, but the goal is to give moms a place to get to know each other, and support each other through the ups and downs of parenthood. Northern Health has more details on its breastfeeding initiative online.
