A team of UNBC researchers are undertaking a study to determine whether some specialty crops can be profitable in the Bulkley-Nechako Region. The hope is to have more agriculture diversification and engage youth in farming. Little Valley Farms is located a short drive west of Vanderhoof. Since the 1940’s, it’s been a family run farm, relying on alfalfa and beef cattle. The instability of the beef industry has created challenges for the farm over the decades, and leave a lot of farmers in the region craving stability. The work will look at things like temperature fluctuations in the region, winter kill, spring run off, and other factors. More than 80 potential new crops will be tested…from vegatables to bioenergy crops such hemp.
