The City of Prince George is having difficulties dealing with people trespassing onto the construction site for the new Hart Skate Park. Some are going through the fences to access the park before it is available to the public. Workers have been coming back to find empty beer cans littering the site. Security has been hired to monitor the area. However, it is not holding unwanted visitors out.
“It doesn’t matter how much fence you can see on site, how much construction is happening.” Michael Le Morvan, Engineering Assistant, City of Prince George said. “When the kids see a space where nobody’s here they come to the site.”
On occasion, the City has had to call in the RCMP to speak with the trespassers. Safety is the biggest concern.
“There’s construction happening so there’s a hazard. The kids can trip, the kids can get hurt and we don’t want that to happen.” Le Morvan said.
Trespassers are not slowing the workers from completing the project. Sod is currently being installed at the site. The City will officially open the park to the public with a ribbon-cutting September 24. The opening will include music and a skateboarding demonstration.
“I understand the anticipation, there are many youth in the community who have been waiting a long time to have a skate park here in the Hart.” Kristi Francis, Chair of The Hart Community Association said.
