UNBC was a dream for Charles McCaffray 30 years ago. A university in the North, for the North. All those years ago, he floated the idea to his then-neighbour and friend, Tom Steadman.
“It was a meeting that we’d been holding and this was the reason to keep meeting. And I said ‘I think that’s the dumbest idea I ever heard of, Charles.’ But Charles kept coming back and coming back,” he told the crowd gathered in the Administrative Building at the university. He finally gave in and said if McCaffray could convince 30 people to come to a meeting to hear his idea, he would go for it. Forty came to the meeting and a dream was borne.
That tenacity was honoured today with the re-naming of the Administrative Building the “Charles J. McCaffray Hall.
