The Pacific Northwest LNG Project Gets Approved

Prince George, BC, Canada / CKPG News

The Federal government has approved the Pacific Northwest LNG project on the North coast. The $36 billion project would see natural gas piped across northern BC from the Fort Nelson area, to a plant slated for Leelu Island south of Prince Rupert, where the gas will be super-cooled to a liquid form and shipped to Asia. Federal approval comes with 190 conditions, including a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, but the plant is estimated to pump as much as 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air annually, making it one of Canada’s largest greenhouse gas emitters.
