Union Of BC Municipalities Hailed An Early Success

The Union of BC Municipalities convention in Victoria is being hailed a success. The City had three resolutions it submitted, one jointly with Quesnel and another in support of the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.
“One of them was a joint one with Quesnel and that was the downloading of DNA costs. The other was a poverty reduction plan, which was passed,” says Brian Skakun, Chair of the City’s Intergovernmental Resolutions Committee. “And another big one was the gaming grants and how they are distributed to non-profits. And then there was fourth one that got deferred to one from Duncan and that had to do with taxing marijuana and regulations coming forward.”
More than two hundred resolutions were presented over three days at the convention and Skakun says some of the more important issues to this region can get lost. But, all the City’s resolutions were ultimately passed.
“The province is going to look at those and come up with a response in the next several months. And a lot of the talk down there was that there is a provincial election coming up. So we’re hoping that some of these resolutions have more traction.”
