Bake Sale Raises Money For Special Olympics Athletes

In the Thanksgiving spirit, locals put together some tasty treats and donated them to a good cause Saturday.

A bake sale at the Art Knapp Garden Centre has raised a total of 300 dollars so far for the more than 160 local athletes competing in Special Olympics events.

The money goes towards equipment and travel expenses for the athletes who compete in a number of different competitions. Local athlete, Marinka Van Hage competes in 11 different sports. She’s been busy making phone calls and organizing the event. “It’s fun because we get to do bake sales and then the money stays with us and it helps us travel,” Van Hage said. “Everybody is so happy when people donate, we get to meet lots of friends and we get to join our sports.”

Each year, Special Olympics BC sees athletes compete in 16 different sport programs. Each bake sale in Prince George raises anywhere from 500 to 600 dollars. Van Hage hopes that goal will be accomplished this weekend.

The bake sale runs again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
