Third Period Surge Gives Smoke Eaters 5-4 Victory Over Spruce Kings

Coming into an away contest Friday night against the Trail Smoke Eaters, the Prince George Spruce Kings had plenty of momentum with a 5-1-1 record over their last seven games.

Despite an quick start, Prince George couldn’t hold on and lost 5-4.  The Spruce Kings jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Ethan de Jong and Jared Hovde.

In the second, it was Spruce Kings Captain, Brett Mennear getting on the score-sheet with his 10th of the year and Chong Lee picking up his sixth goal of this regular season campaign.

Up 4-2 going into the third period, the Spruce Kings got complacent and managed to give up three goals in the final 20 minutes of play.

Just under two minutes into the third, Trail capitalized on the powerplay with a goal from Blaine Caton. Mitchell Barker would tie things up for the Smoke Eaters just a couple of minutes later, and Luke Santerno sealed the deal for the 5-4 Trail victory.

The Spruce Kings now travel to Penticton for a bout with the Vees at 6 p.m. Saturday.
