The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in to investigate after a man was found unresponsive in a Prince George RCMP cell.
Around 11:30 Sunday night, local Mounties were called to the 100 block of Quebec St for reports of an intoxicated man who was causing a disturbance. Police located the man in the 1200 block of 2nd Ave where the man was arrested for being drunk in public and taken into the RCMP detachment where he was lodged in a cell.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, a cell check found the man to be unresponsive. Emergency Health Services were called in while RCMP members initiated CPR. Upon arrival, resuscitation efforts were taken over by a medical team and the man was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m.
IIO BC will now investigate if there is a connection between the man’s death and the actions of police. The RCMP has also initiated an Independent Officer Review of the incident according to existing policies.
The Prince George RCMP will no longer be providing further information on the matter at this time.
