50 UNBC JDC West students, coaches and community members plunged into ice-cold water today in support of the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.
The Chillin’ 4 Charity takes place each November. An inflatable pool was filled with freezing water outside of the CN Centre, and participants jumped in for the cause. “Last year, individually with the team we have raised about $12,000 from this event, ” says Co-Captain of UNBC JDC West, Brendan Bellavance. “Local community people ended up matching it so we got it up to $100,000, so we are hoping to do the same this year.”
Money raised will go towards the Breast Health Imaging Centre; a half a million dollar campaign.
Spirit of the North CEO, Judy Neiser, says “Having more people actually go and have their mammogram regularly means better health outcomes. Also the idea that once they have had a diagnosis that there is more of a planned approach to how their treatment would be, and less waiting period.”
In the past 25 years, more that $31 million has been raised through various fundraising efforts for equipment and grants to improve healthcare in the north.
