Federation Of Canadian Municipalities Meeting A Success

Two local Councillors, Garth Frizzell and Murry Krause, spent the last week in Ottawa as part of Federation of Canadian Municipalities meetings, where they had a chance to connect with hundreds of ministers from a number of different parties.
And on everyone’s lips was the need for infrastructure spending, whether the community is large or small.
The Trudeau government recent released details on Phase Two of the Build Canada Plan, which commits to funding infrastructure around transit, social issues and green energy.
They say they found strong support for local infrastructure priorities among Parliamentarians of all political stripes.
“The federal government`s infrastructure plan is a huge opportunity to strengthen our community — with better roads and bridges, good jobs, and more affordable housing. But all of this hinges now on Ottawa getting the funding details right,” said Frizzell.
Krause said cost-sharing with federal and provincial governments also needs to be modernized, so projects aren’t held back by local fiscal limits. He also backs the FCM call to dedicate most of the Phase 2 Social Infrastructure Fund to tackling the housing affordability crisis that’s threatening communities across Canada. Final decisions for the design of Phase 2 are expected no later than Budget 2017.
