Cats Defeat Royals 4-2, Gabrielle Nets Hat-Trick

Jesse Gabrielle is making a huge name for himself in the WHL, putting up big points for the Cougars including a three goal night on Friday that saw PG defeat the Victoria Royals 4-2 at CN Centre.

Gabrielle now has six goals in his last three games, while Jansen Harkins wouldn’t be outdone Friday with a three assist night, helping the cats to a 20th victory on the season.

The Boston Bruin prospect, Gabrielle opened the scoring off a feed from Harkins just less than five minutes into the game, sneaking the puck past Royals net minder Griffen Outhouse.

Two minutes later, the Royals answered right back when Ryan Peckford made pass to Mathew Phillips to spring him for a break-away. Phillips made no mistake going glove side on Cougars goalie, Ty Edmonds to tie this game at one.

After a back and forth battle, the dynamic duo of Harkins and Gabrielle would strike again with just over five minutes left in the second period. From behind the net, Harkins found Gabrielle in the slot who took two steps and ripped his second goal of the game to put the Cougars back on top.

It must have been de ja vu for the cats, as just two minutes later the Victoria Royals again tied up the game. This time, Regan Nagy snuck into the right circle and sniped the puck just under the crossbar, past Edmond’s glove.

Caught up in the excitement of knotting this up, the Royals would last only 55 seconds until the Cougars struck back. Colby McAuley skated down the left wing and placed a perfect puck just under the bar, past the shoulder of Outhouse.

In the third period, Prince George sealed the victory with Jesse Gabrielle’s third goal of the night. Can you guess who assisted it? Jansen Harkins of course. Harkins won a free puck along the wall, then centred it to Jared Bethune, who found Gabrielle along the right wing to bury the insurance marker.

Ty Edmonds made 25 saves on the cats victory, while the Cougars out-shot the Royals 30-27.

Both clubs are set for a rematch 7 p.m. Saturday at CN Centre.
