The Prince George Cougars started its weekend double-header with a 3-2 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday night at CN Centre.
The Cats struck first despite being outshot 5-0 early on in the first period. A lucky break for Jesse Gabrielle allowed the boston Bruins prospect to break loose on a short-handed break-away, burying his 19th of the season for a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, Seattle bounced right back. Sami Moilanen tied the game after knocking home a Jarret Tyszka rebound past Cougars goalie Ty Edmonds.
The stalemate would only last 66 seconds however, as Yan Khomenko quickly put Prince George back on top after following up with an Aaron Boyd rebound.
Early on in the second period, Seattle once again quickly erased the Cougars lead. This time, Keegan Kolesar skated across the Cats blueline and wired a shot under the crossbar past Edmonds.
Both teams would trade blows in the second, but just a minute and a half into the third period, Seattle got its first lead of the game. Donovan Neuls put home his ninth of the season off a scramble in front of Ty Edmonds.
A late surge from the Cougars wouldn’t be enough to overcome the deficit. Both clubs are back in action tonight for the Teddy Bear Toss game at CN Centre.
