The Prince George Cougars are looking ‘alive at 25’ managing to reach 25 wins on the season following Friday night’s 3-2 victory in Seattle against the Thunderbirds.
Brad Morrison and Yan Khomenko each found twine and recorded assists for the cats, while Nick McBride earned his 6th win of the season making 25 of 27 saves on the night.
The Cougars got on the board early, juts 57 seconds into the game, thanks to Colby McAuley who fired a shot on the Seattle goal from behind the goal line. The puck managed to bank off Seattle goalie Rylan Toth and in for McAuley’s 13th of the year.
Later on in the frame, the Thunderbirds would bounce back as Scott Eansor managed to find space on a wrap-around to beat McBride.
In the second, the Cats gained momentum when Morrison ripped a shot from the right circle for his 15th of the year at the 6:57 mark. Then, a few minutes later, Khomenko tapped in a pass from Morrison on the powerplay to make it 3-1.
A pair of fights in the second revved up both sides as Kody McDonald dropped the gloves with Tyler Adams and Cougars captain, Sam Ruopp went toe to toe with Keegan Kolesar.
Prince George didn’t let up from there as McBride managed to turn away a penalty shot to deny Kolesar in the third period. Seattle would pull within one goal when Nolan Volcan deflected home an Ethan Bear point shot, but it wouldn’t be enough to come back.
The Cougars out-shot the Thunderbirds 34-27 and secured a fourth straight victory to become the first team in the WHL to reach 25 wins this season. Prince George now travels to Spokane for a tilt with the Chiefs Saturday at 7 p.m.
