Ice Jam Safety Concerns

The city isn’t reporting much movement when it comes to the stationary ice on the Nechako river, and now curious onlookers are raising questions about safety. Local Fire Chief John Iverson issuing a personal warning to those wanting to get a closer look or who are venturing near local rivers. The Chief says hes seen many tragedies after a fall into the fast moving waters – if a victim doesn’t succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes, they will likely be swept under the ice. The City continues to ask the public to observe barricades around the jam, the Heritage River Trail remains closed from Cottonwood Island to the Cameron Street Bridge, as well as parking lots at the canoe and boat launch and Kiwanis Park.
