One man is dead after an avalanche Friday afternoon in the area of Clemina, just southeast of Valemount.
Police says the incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. when a man on a snow mobile had been caught in the avalanche and died. The BC Coroners Service and Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to the scene. Upon arrival, SAR crews determined the scene was too unstable for a recovery effort and would resume when safe.
Avalanche Control from Jasper, Alberta has been called in and is schedule to arrive Saturday to assess the scene and help in recovering the man.
Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing and the North District RCMP says no further information will be released as recovery efforts continue.
UPDATE: Officers were told a male on a snowmobiler has now been recovered in the avalanche. The man’s identity has not been released and police say an investigation into his death is still ongoing.
