Cats Acquire Russian Forward Nikita Popugaev

Prince George General Manager Todd Harkins announced Thursday that the Cougars have acquired 1998-born forward Nikita Popugaev from the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Cats make the trade in exchange for 1998-born forward Yan Khomenko and 1999 born forward, Justin Almeida, a second-round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and fifth round pick in the 2017 draft.

Popugaev checks in a 6’5″ and 202 pounds. The right-hander is the 7th leading scorer in the WHL this season with 22 goals and 29 assists for 51 points. In 110 career WHL games, he has 38 goals, 60 assists and 42 penalty minutes and added two goals and two assists in six playoff games last season.

Popugaev is expected to be in Prince George in time for Friday night’s home match up with the Victoria Royals.
