A valiant comeback effort fell short for the Spruce Kings in a 6 – 5 double overtime loss to Chilliwack. Ben Brar’s second goal of the game with just 5 seconds left in regulation time, forced extra time. However Kale Kane struck with a dagger at 1:35 of the second overtime to visiting Chiefs to the win.
Prince George had built a 4 – 1 lead at midway through the second period, chasing the Chiefs starting netminder, Mark Sinclair from the goal. Bryce Schiebel entered the game for the next seven seconds before giving way to Sinclair. The goaltending move changed the game’s momentum as Chilliwack struck three times in the next ten minutes to carry a 5 – 4 lead into the third period. Sinclair was near perfect the rest of the night, stopping 27 of 28 shots.
Kane finished the night with 2 goals and 2 assists while Will Calverley had a pair of goals. Prince George Captain Brett Mennear led the Kings with 3 assists.
The two squads meet again Saturday night at 7 at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena. The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation will be at the game, collecting donations for new surgical equipment at Saint John’s Hospital in Vanderhoof. The goal is $3,300. The Kings will donate their portion of the 50/50 to the cause.
