2016 was a record setting year for not only Northen BC, but the entire province. Northern British Colombia set a record for the number of organ transplants preformed. 21 transplants were preformed in 2015, building from the 10, and 17 recorded in 2014, and 2015 respectively.
Despite topping the previous record 20, Dr. Sean Keenan, the Medical Director for Donation with BC Transplant said: “There is obviously an on going need. On top of that, the potential for more transplants is directly linked to availability. If you have more doners clearly more transplants will get done.”
423 people received a life-saving transplant in BC last year, and officials from Transplant BC are continually trying to grow that number. To join over a million British Colombian’s as an registered organ donor, visit transplant.bc.ca.
