Northern Medical Program’s Research Into Deaths from Addiction

New research out of the Northern Medical Program has shone new light on the causes of death in individuals struggling with addictions. The research showed that, in individuals suffering from chronic drug or alcohol use were more than twice as likely to die of a smoking related diseases, such as cancers and cardiovascular disease. That was based on studies done on 16 years of records, beginning in 1990. Dr. Russ Callaghan conducted the work and says, smoking has often been overlooked as a major cause of death in those circumstances.
