Police Looking For Additional Officers

Mayor and Council have wrapped up their first budget meeting for 2017.
The first item on the table was the policing budget, worth more than $25 million. The RCMP is looking to add to its complement of officers by two. The cost of the two officers from September, which is the earliest they could arrive in the city, to December is $113,000. In the following year, the cost of the two additional officers would be 340-thousand dollars to the policing budget a year and to the tax levy.
Superintendent Warren Brown says the community continues to be a high crime city and the “status quo is unacceptable.” Adding to that, for a variety of reasons, there are typically 114 to 117 officers on the streets, despite a budget for 124 officers. But he assures Mayor and Council there is a new “robust recruitment process” underway.
However, his request is one of five for additional dollars which will be discussed at the February 1st meeting.
