It shook homes and rattled residents along the Nechako river, while sending emergency crews scurrying. But in the end, the source of last night’s explosion, was a controlled blast at a rock quarry off Otway Road. It occurred shortly after 8:30pm. Fire Rescue personnel along with RCMP members searched for the source of the sound for more than an hour before learning of the blast at the quarry. Steve Johansen is the operator of Pat’s Pit where the blast occurred. He says the Ministry of Energy and Mines was aware of the blasting operation. Johansen is out of the country at the moment, but will be talking to the contractor upon his return to learn why the blast occurred in the evening. Johansen says this is the third blasting operation at the quarry, but the first to create such a stir.
