Low Number Of Sexual Assault Claims Surprise Local Organization

Six percent of sexual assault allegations from 2010 to 2014 in Prince George were dismissed as unfounded.

That comes from a report by the Globe and Mail after a 20 month investigation.

The unfounded rate across Canada is 19%.

Laura Nordin with the Surpassing Our Survival society of Prince George says shes surprised by the low number in city, but adds that not many people report that they’ve been victimized as they feel threatened by the RCMP.

Over 1200 sexual assault allegations were reported in the five year period.

Allegations leading to charges in Prince George:

2010 – 42/256 – 16%
2011 – 41/246 – 17%
2012 – 50/256 – 20%
2013 – 37/240 – 15%
2014 – 40/246 – 16%

In B.C, 11% of claims were deemed as baseless, the lowest rate in the country.
