When the 3rd period horn sounded, it was probably the loudest a CN Centre crowd has ever roared for a 1-1 score.
But the nearly 6000 Cougars faithful knew exactly what it meant: the franchise’s first ever division title.
The 1 point the Cougars picked up in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Kamloops Blazers was all they needed and cared about Saturday night. It meant the Cougars secured first place in the B.C. Division, and yet another piece of franchise history.
“It’s amazing. Been here four years, been through thick and thin. The battle of each season is very satisfying to get that division title and to hang a banner in this building,” said captain Sam Ruopp.
It’s been a season of rewriting the history books for the Cougars. Among the numerous records to fall: most wins in a season, all-time scoring leader and nearly every goalie record thanks to veteran Ty Edmonds. The way things have gone this season is a little surreal for Edmonds.
