New funding is available for food banks in BC. The province announced $10 million in funding for ‘Food Banks BC’. It operates 100 programs including the Salvation Army Food Bank in Prince George.
While it will have to apply for the grant, the Salvation Army could use the money. This week, it received a 53 ft trailer full of frozen yellow string beans. Most of the of 48 pallets still remain in the trailer, as storage is always an issue. With the new funding, the Food Bank will be able to meet refrigeration needs for perishable food items.
“What we would be looking at is movable storage,” says Captain Neil Wilkinson. “So we would be far better to invest in a tractor trailer that has a refreeze unit on it in order to meet the needs, so then that way we can flex and move with the different demands that we have got.”
