School District 57 will be voting on reopening Springwood Elementary School in the Hart at its regular board meeting tonight.
Springwood was closed in 2010. It is one of the 22 schools in the district to be closed since 2002.
The BC Teachers’ Federation and the province reached an agreement to restore classroom size and composition to what they were 15 years ago. Now the district is looking at ways to accommodate that. Additional classrooms are needed at Glenview Elementary School, Heather Park Elementary School and the Hart Highlands Elementary School.
As part of the recommendation put forth by Superintendent Marilyn Marquis-Forster and Secretary Treasurer Allan Reed, the catchment areas would be revised for Heather Park and Glenview. The recommendation allows families affected by the change 5 months of preparation and a transfer process opportunity. Families not in the Springwood catchment area, but wanting their children to attend the new school, can make application from April 9th – 21st.
Voting on the recommendation is the first business item on tonight’s agenda.
