Special Flag Raised At City Hall

It was a cool and blustery morning at City Hall, the ideal conditions to raise a special flag to mark a sombre occasion. April 9th, 1917, Canadian troops were successful is securing Vimy Ridge, south of Calais, in Northern France. It was an horrific battle, with the loss of life in the thousands. But as John Scott with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, says, it as a defining moment for Canadian troops who, prior to that battle, fought under the auspices of the British.
“The Canadian troops fought under Canadian command [at Vimy Ridge], all four divisions at once,” he says. “It’s been known since then as the birth of Canada.”
There will be a parade, starting on Sixth Avenue, at 11:45 on Sunday. The parade will travel to the cenotaph, where there will be a special ceremony to lay some wreaths and hold some short speeches. The event will wrap up at at Legion on Sixth Avenue. Don Ford, whose father was a WWI vet,  will be speaking at the Legion.
