The Cariboo Fire Centre has announced a ban on Category Three open fires. Those are fires larger than two metres high and includes the burning of stubble or grass in an area larger than 0.2 hectares. It does not apply to campfires.
The BC Wildfire Service says the prohibition is being put in place because of a risk of so called ‘holdover’ fires. Holdover fires smoulder undetected for a long time underground before flaring up as the temperature rises.
The ban goes into effect tomorrow at noon throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre and will remain in place until September 30th.
