Nearly 600 vehicles lined up for a truck load of compost last April. The Foothills Landfill is gearing up for the 3rd annual Spring Compost Giveaway.
On Friday from 3-6 p.m., residents are encouraged to come get a load of compost in exchange for non-perishable food donations.
The donations are used to make food hampers at the St. Vincent De Paul Drop-In Centre.
“We are not too picky about the amount,” says the Waste Diversion Program Leader of the Regional District, Rachael Ryder. “Before we put ‘non-perishable food item’ and we would get one can. We said ‘non-perishable food items’ this time.”
To keep the process moving quickly, the Landfill is limiting compost loads to a regular truck load, which is about 2 cubic metres.
However, there are still ways to get more than one truck load of free compost. “In that 3 hour time period if you can get up here more than once, you are more than welcome to come,” says Ryder. “Just remember each time to bring the non-perishable food donations and we will be happy to load you up with another load of compost.”
