The 35th annual Speech Arts & Drama Festival is underway at UNBC. The event is divided into a series of categories, and children recite poems and passages. While performances are mostly individual, there are some duos and groups.
Today, Cedars Christian School brought home hardware. The Cedars grade 7 class placed first in the ‘Large Group Oral Speaking’ category. Four boys also placed first, in the 11 and under group for ‘Dramatic Small Group Poetry’.
Sacred Heart School also participated, and participate annually.
“Not so much for the school, but for the kids to have the experience of pushing towards excellence is a good thing,” says Grade 7 Teacher, Julia Tuininga. “Just to have some experience of speaking in front of people. If you think about adults who are very afraid to speak in front of people, this just introduces it to them. How to speak clearly, how enunciate and those kinds of things is just a great experience for the students.”
The Speech Arts Festival continues until Thursday evening, and is open to the public. The Honours Performance will be Saturday, May 13th, at 7 p.m.
