The valedictorians at UNBC for the Class of 2017 have been named. Shelly Niemi and Faran Rashid will give a speech during the convocation celebration on May 26th.
Shelly Niemi is graduating with a Master’s in Education in Multidisciplinary Leadership. In 2012, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations Studies, making this the second degree she has received at UNBC. Niemi is a first-generation Indigenous student with Metis and Cree ancestry. She credits some of her success to the supports available for Indigenous students at UNBC. She will further her studies at Western University in London, Ontario. Niemi plans to get a PhD in school leadership for international contexts.
Faran Rashid is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. He earned the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s Research Studentship during his studies. He is the first UNBC student to ever receive the scholarship. Rashid spent hundreds of hours volunteering in Prince George at the Northern BC Crisis Centre, the University Hospital of Northern BC, the Canadian Blood Services and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Northern Region office. He plans to pursue a career in medicine geared towards drug development and design.
