Work On WIRL Underway

The heavy equipment is on the scene of the new Wood Innovation Research Lab on Fifth Avenue. Premier Christy Clark announced $4.5 million in funding during the Resources North convention in February and the groundbreaking started today. The one-storey, 10,000 square foot building will enhance the research conducted by students of the Masters in Wood Design program currently housed in the Wood Innovation and Design Centre.
“What we’re doing with this building is looking at more then ‘How much energy do our buildings need?’ Not necessarily where’s the energy coming from, but can we reduce the amount of energy a building needs,” explains David Claus, UNBC’s Assistant Director of Facilities.
He says another interesting feature with the construction of this facility is that the students of the Masters program will have a hand in building the structure.
It’s expected the new facility will see its first intake of students next year.
