UNBC Sexual Violence Policy Released

UNBC’s Board of Governors has approved a new Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy and a set of procedures for dealing with incidents on campus. In 2015, the Province passed legislation setting out that all post-secondary institutions in BC would have such policies in place to deal with sexual misconduct on campus.

The work to develop the policy was led by a committee chaired by faculty member Dr. Gary Wilson, with Assistant Director Student Affairs Brenda Slomka, Northern Women’s Centre Executive Director Sarah Boyd, and Human Resources Manager Kerry Roberts making up the remaining membership. This committee worked closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff and senior administration.

“Sexual violence and misconduct are never acceptable,” said Dr. Daniel Weeks, UNBC President and Vice-Chancellor. “We are committed to providing members of the University community with a safe, supportive and respectful environment in which to live, learn and work.”

Now, the UNBC will pull together Response Teams and training will get underway, in conjunction with the RCMP and School District 57, next month.
