Federation Of Canadian Municipalities Underway

Mayor Lyn Hall and some of City Council are in Ottawa this week, meeting with their peers from other Canadian cities, large and small, as part of the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention. Council recently put forward a Poverty Reduction resolution and it has been chosen as one of only four that will reach the floor for convention-wide discussion. Mayor Lyn Hall says the resolution is timely.
“We’ve got a federal government that’s talking about poverty reduction program and we’ve had some conversations, obviously, with the provincial government,” he says. “It’s all about the timing. So there is interest from coast-to-coast   We’ve got a federal government that’s taolking about poverty reduction program and we’ve had some conversations, obviously, with the provincial government. It’s all about the timing. So there is interest from coast-to-coast.”
Another resolution has direct impact, locally, as well. It calls on the FCM to:
1) continue to work with the federal government to support the interests of municipalities across Canada affected by U.S. countervailing duties on softwood lumber and 2) work to ensure that the federal government understands the full impact of trade measures related to softwood lumber on local economies and conveys that impact to U.S. counterparts.
It was a resolution put forward by Quebec and Mayor Hall says he wants a sit-down with those delegates.
“I’m hoping to find out from other provinces what they’re doing. We know that Quebec mayors went down  to Washington about the impact of the tariffs and the countervailing duties have on their industry in Quebec. Washington certainly knows about the impact on BC, on Alberta and right across the country. But I’m interested in what strategies the Quebec mayors used, what strategies other mayors from other communities like ours are using to get the message out.”
A third connection is that Councillor Garth Frizzell is running for Third Vice-President. That election takes place Sunday.
